Member of Parliament for Manhyia North Constituency Collins Owusu Amankwah will lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2016 parliamentary elections after he won his party’s primary on Saturday, July 2. Mr Amankwah polled 185 votes to beat contenders Kwaku Konadu, who polled 171 votes, and Frank Osei Bamfo, who polled 129 votes.
Four votes were rejected. The primary had been re-scheduled several times following a convoluted wrangle over the eligibility of the voters’ register. The greenlight was given after all but four polling stations successfully elected their executives in June.
Saturday’s primary was temporarily held up after police clashed with personnel of private security firm Delta Force. A warning shot was fired by the Chief Inspector on duty while one party member was arrested.
Mr Amankwaah’s win will see him come face-to-face with National Democratic Congress’ Yahuza Abdul Rahman in the 2016 race.
