ACCRA: The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) has issued a fresh weather advisory, warning that more rainfall and thunderstorms are expected across several parts of Ghana as a rainstorm system from neighboring Benin moves closer today.
According to GhanaSky.com analyst, GMet said, the approaching weather system is likely to increase rainfall intensity, particularly across southern and coastal regions, while thunderstorms could affect other parts of the country throughout the day.
Residents are being urged to remain vigilant, especially in communities that are already dealing with the aftermath of recent flooding.
Heavy Rainfall Expected Across Several Regions
GMet’s latest forecast indicates that cloudy conditions, intermittent showers, and thunderstorms are expected to develop over many parts of the country. The approaching rainstorm from Benin is expected to enhance moisture over Ghana, creating favorable conditions for widespread rainfall.
Areas that are prone to flooding are considered to be at the highest risk, particularly where drainage systems are already overwhelmed from previous downpours.
Residents have been advised to closely monitor official weather updates and prepare for rapidly changing weather conditions.
Southern Ghana Still Recovering from Recent Flooding
The latest warning comes as several communities across southern Ghana continue to recover from heavy rains that recently triggered flooding, disrupting transportation, damaging property, and affecting daily activities.
Local authorities have been working to clear drainage channels and restore affected areas. However, additional rainfall could worsen existing conditions and increase the likelihood of renewed flooding in vulnerable communities.
Emergency officials are encouraging residents living near rivers, streams, and low-lying areas to remain alert and take preventive measures before heavy rains begin.
GMet Warns of Rough Sea Conditions
In addition to the rainfall warning, GMet has cautioned that sea conditions are expected to become rough as the weather system strengthens.
The agency is advising:
- Fishermen to postpone fishing trips where possible.
- Boat operators to exercise extreme caution before venturing onto the sea.
- Coastal communities and other sea users to closely monitor weather conditions.
- Maritime operators to prioritize safety and follow official advisories.
Strong winds associated with thunderstorms can produce dangerous waves and significantly reduce visibility, increasing the risks for anyone operating on the water.
Safety Precautions for the Public
GMet is encouraging the public to take the following precautions during the period of unstable weather:
- Avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rainfall and thunderstorms.
- Stay away from floodwaters and fast-moving streams.
- Do not attempt to drive through flooded roads.
- Secure outdoor property that could be damaged by strong winds.
- Unplug electrical appliances during severe thunderstorms where necessary.
- Keep emergency contacts readily available.
- Follow updates from GMet and local authorities.
People living in flood-prone communities should remain especially vigilant and be prepared to move to safer locations if conditions deteriorate.
Importance of Monitoring Official Weather Updates
Weather conditions can change rapidly during the rainy season, making it essential for residents to stay informed through official forecasts and emergency announcements.
Authorities are urging the public not to rely on rumors or unverified social media posts but instead to follow updates issued by GMet and other relevant emergency agencies.
Timely access to accurate weather information can help individuals, families, and businesses make informed decisions and reduce the risks associated with severe weather.
As the Benin rainstorm system approaches Ghana, GMet is urging residents across the country to remain alert for heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, possible flooding, and rough sea conditions. With parts of southern Ghana still recovering from recent floods, taking early precautions could help protect lives and property.
Residents in flood-prone areas should monitor official weather bulletins, avoid unnecessary travel during severe weather, and follow guidance from local authorities until conditions improve.
